Inside the RMS Roller Grinder Shop- On the Plant Floor with Roy

After sitting down with Roy Olson to discuss RMS Endurance Rolls, I had the opportunity to walk through the RMS Roller Grinder plant floor and see the work behind the product.

The first stop was the corrugation shop. This is where dull roller-mill rolls are restored using corrugators; precision machines designed to sharpen and recut the corrugation profile on each roll. RMS currently operates six corrugators and is expanding capacity, which tells you something about the demand for this service.

The process is far more than simply putting a roll in a machine and cutting grooves. Each roll begins with an inspection. Shafts are evaluated and repaired or replaced when needed, and bearings are pulled before the roll moves forward in the process. The corrugator is then set up for the specific roll diameter and corrugation profile so the roll can be recut to its original configuration.

Depending on the roll size and profile, recutting can take anywhere from one to twelve hours. That precision matters. In a roller mill, the roll profile is central to how the product performs whether you are grinding feed, flour, soy, or another processed grain products. The goal is to return the roll to the exact profile required for the job.

Once corrugation is complete, the rolls are checked on a dynamic roll balancer. Balancing is an important final step before a roll returns to service. A properly balanced roll supports smoother operation and helps protect the mill from unnecessary vibration and wear.

RMS also maintains a substantial inventory of rolls in a range of sizes and profiles to support its roll-swap program. That can be a real advantage for an operation: instead of waiting through the full reconditioning cycle, a customer can install a replacement roll and keep production moving while the worn roll is restored.

My biggest takeaway from the visit was the RMS shop itself: clean, well organized, and equipped with modern machinery. More importantly, the operators clearly understood their work and took pride in doing it right. That sense of professionalism and teamwork was evident throughout the plant.

RMS combines capable equipment, responsive service, and people who understand the importance of keeping customers productive. That is the kind of partner that helps an operation move forward with confidence.

Grain Guy Fifty leaves you with this thought: Roller-mill performance depends on details that are easy to overlook—until production suffers. Roll condition, correct corrugation, shaft integrity, and balance all matter. Seeing the RMS shop floor reinforced that its roll program is not simply about supplying a component; it is about helping customers protect uptime, product quality, and the performance of the entire milling operation.

If you operate roller mills, RMS Roller Grinder is a team you should seriously consider. Between its Endurance Roll program, outstanding service support, and modern facility, RMS offers roller-mill operators a comprehensive, industry-leading approach to roll and mill management.

This is part three of my RMS Roller Grinder series. I hope you enjoyed this visual tour of the RMS facility and picked up a few new insights along the way.

Thank you for reading and for being part of the conversation. If you operate roller mills, I would like to hear what roll maintenance practices have made the biggest difference in your operation.

Regards,

Grain Guy Fifty
